Definition

Increasing the level of public participation in decision-making is recognised as an important part of moving towards sustainable development. Access to information is fundamental to empowering individuals to make conscious choices and to actively and usefully participate in decision-making. In order for this to be properly achieved, an accountable and transparent decision-making process is of particular importantance. Similarly, information provision can be an important factor the the effectiveness and efficiency of a particular policy.[1]
