Scope

Does the option reduce or increase use of non-renewable resources (groundwater, minerals etc)?[1]

Definition

One of the main principles of Sustainability is to reduce the use of non-renewable resources. The substitution of non-renewable resources through renewable resources, for example wind energy instead of lignite coal, is thus an important challenge for a sustainable development of the European Union that also pays attention to the asymmetries in resource use of developed and developing countries. First of all, this applies to Energy policy. Renewable energy sources are defined here as wind, solar, geothermal, wave, tidal, hydropower, biomass, landfill gas, sewage treatment plant gas and bio-gases.[1]
