Scope

Does the option affect the protection of young people at work?[1]

Definition

This question refers to the rights and opportunities of young people at work. A particular care need to be provided to work experience students, apprendices and young people at the very beginning of their working career. These kind of workers need to have access to the same health, safety and welfare conditions of other workers, which is not always the case. Policy proposals aiming, or having an indirect effect, of increasing the number of young workers need to have a particlar attention to the equal opportuniites of these workers and an easy access to traning opportunities. The percentage of young workers identifies the ratio between workers aged 25 or less, and the overall number of workers. In addition, this percentage may be used as a rough indicator of how experienced the work-force is; by the same token, it may signal a higher growth potential, since young workers can be expected to have higher flexibility and are less resistant to new technology adoption. Examples of measures favouring young worker participation to workforce are ESF training programmes, which are mostly focused on young population.?[1]
