Transcription factor

Transcription factor: a cell protein that can bind to specific sites at DNA (see this) or a member of a set of such proteins, which after binding to DNA initiate a chain of events leading to expression of a particular gene. This usually leads to the synthesis of a protein determined by that gene. [1]
