Agnotology is the study of deliberate propagation of ignorance. [1] In other words, agnotology is the study of wilful acts to spread confusion and deceit, usually to sell a product or win favour. Important researchers in this area are Robert Proctor and David Dunning.

Important books in this area are Doubt is Their Product: How Industry's Assault on Science Threatens Your Health by David Michaels (about tobacco industry) and Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming by Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway (about tobacco industry and climate denialists).
