What is the prevalence and incidence of narcolepsy (ICD-10 G47.4) in Finland?

Definition

Literature[1]

  • In general the prevalence of narcolepsy is bout 0.05% in the world population.
    • In Finland it is slightly smaller at 0.026%.
  • Narcolepsy is "very rare" in subjects younger than 10 years old.
  • General incidence is about 1.4*10-5a-1.
    • In about 10% of cases evidence of affected relatives exists.
  • In twin studies the environment has been shown to have a very large impact.
  • Symptoms "seem to" peak at ages 15 and 36.
  • Suspected triggers: infections, allergic reactions, inflammatory diseases, other autoimmunity diseases, brain damage, thyroid disorders, psychological trauma
